COLLECTIVE SML | k
COLLECTIVE SML | k is an artist-run project space located just south of Santa Fe Art District of Denver, Colorado. We are open to any creative suggestions to make Denver a more exciting and supportive art community. One of the collective's critical missions is promoting Asian and Asian-American art and narratives through cross-cultural exchange and research.
CAARP (Contemporary Asian Art Residency Project) is an artist residency and exchange and one of the anchoring programs of the Collective SML | k. CAARP is a partnership of Collective SML | k and RedLine Contemporary Art Center. Also, CAARP collaborates with many local art non-profit organizations and institutions to support visual practices that address underrepresented issues and bring forward current and relevant art from Asian and Asian American communities. Since 2017, Collective SML | k hosted the following creative residents through CAARP.

DUMPLING DIASPORA is the inaugural Asian American cultural project at Collective SML | k. It is a research-based, community-centered workshop that culminates in an art exhibition and artist's book. Under the guidance of Sammy Lee, a recent University of Colorado Denver graduate and a local illustrator Madalyn Drewno spearheaded research and interviews on the dumplings in Asian America from the lens of Asian Diaspora. Drewno illustrated series of dumplings and formally presented at the Collective SML | k space in 2019. Drewno's research and presentation will be becoming an artist's book soon.
CURATORIAL WORK
counterART is the curatorial project on South Korean pro-democracy movement and protests art by Collective SML | k. It took place at the RedLine Contemporary Art Center from October 4 - December 15, 2019. Sammy Lee produced and co-curated with Yang Wang the exhibit, and it was made possible by the generous sponsors listed below.

inVISIBLE | hyperVISIBLE is a public humanities project on Asian America. The project consists of an art exhibition, artist talks, public lectures, and community-building workshops. inVISIBLE | hyperVISIBLE will run from September 10 to October 10, 2021 at RedLine Contemporary Art Center.
The theme inVISIBLE | hyperVISIBLE captures the struggles of Asians and Asian Americans to survive and thrive in the face of strong anti-Asian sentiment. Asians and Asian Americans are alternately made invisible and hypervisible through stereotypes such as “model minorities,” “honorary whites,”“perpetual foreigners,” and “enemy aliens.” Yet, Asian America is remarkably complex due to cultural diversity, various migration routes, and different socioeconomic circumstances. inVISIBLE | hyperVISIBLE will showcase Asian and Asian American artists, scholars, performers, and community organizers from different ethnic, gender, and geographic backgrounds.
